Job opportunities in the turpentine industry brought both white and black Americans into Lake Wales to work for the C. L. Johnson and Company turpentine complex, which began operations in 1911. (Courtesy of Historic Lake Wales Society and Depot Museum.)

African Americans played an important role in building Polk County. This 1911 photograph shows a crew working on the road that would become Scenic Highway in front of a newly built store on Starr Lake. The railroad and the highway were laid together. As the railroad progressed, workers were able to bring supplies for both projects by railcar. (Courtesy of Historic Lake Wales Society and Depot Museum.)
